Friday Night MLB Pick

Record 10-11 (-261)

Taking the Toronto Blue Jays (-127)

The Jays start Brandon Morrow. On the year his numbers seem lousy. 1-2 with a 6.14 ERA. So why do I like Jays ? Let's look deeper at Morrow. His ERA is high, but he does have 24 strikeouts in 22 innings, and a .234 BAA. He does walk alot of guys, but the A's are not a particularly patient team at the plate. In his last 2 starts, Morrow went 13 innings, allowing only 6 hits with 16 strikeouts. Last year against the A's he was awesome. In 11 innings pitched against the A's, he allowed only 2 hits with 13 strikeouts, and a BAA of only .054. For his entire career against the A's he is 2-0 with a 4.13 ERA, but with 38 strikeouts in 32.2 innings, and a BAA of .176. Morrow is a better pitcher than his season numbers show, and he will shine tonight.

Meanwhile the A's go with Trevor Cahill, who was called up from Triple A Sacramento to make the start. He has only pitched 8.2 innings in the minors this season (he had a lousy spring, with a 5.95 ERA which got him a ticket to the minors), allowing 7 hits and 5 walks. In 2009 he was 10-13 with a 4.63 ERA, a 1.442 WHIP and a .270 BAA. On the road last year (which is his entire career), he was 3-6 with a 5.10 ERA. For his career against the Jays he is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA, a 2.156 WHIP and a .310 BAA.

The public will see Cahill's 0.00 ERA and Morrow's 6.14 ERA and they will play the A's. But as you can see, those numbers are deceptive. The A's, who have lost 3 in a row and who are 3-6 on the road this year, will get thumped by the Jays tonight.
